Apply for Employee & Family Housing

Faculty, Staff & Student's with Families

  • Income: 2.5 times the amount of the license fee
  • Qualifying credit report
  • Positive rental references with no prior evictions
  • Satisfactory background check

Please note: Students with families is defined as married couples or domestic partnerships with/without children or single parents with children. 

Faculty & Staff

  • Proof of Income: Provide previous two (2) months of verifiable income or prior years tax returns (if self-employed) or an offer letter from SFSU.

  • Photo ID: Valid Government issued Driver’s License or Identification Card.  A Passport, Visa and a current I-20 is required for International applicants.

  • Proof of Affiliation with SFSU: SFSU ID card and offer letter for new faculty and staff.

Students with families

  • Proof of Income: Provide previous two (2) months of verifiable income or prior years tax returns (if self-employed). If applicant receives financial aid, a Financial Aid Award Letter will be required. 

  • Parent Letter: If parents/guardians are providing financial support, a certified statement of support will be required. The letter must contain name, address, email address (if applicable), phone number and amount of support.

  • Photo ID: Valid Government issued Driver’s License or Identification Card.  A Passport, Visa and a current I-20 is required for International applicants.

  • Proof of Affiliation with SFSU: SFSU ID card and an admission letter

  • Copy of Student’s Class Schedule: current or future

  • Additional documents: Documents verifying dependent(s). i.e. birth certificates

Please ensure all documents listed above are present with the application.

  1. Prospect to contact the Employee & Family Housing Office at (415) 405-4000 or via email at employee_housing@sfsu.edu and express interest in living at San Francisco State University.

  2. Employee & Family Housing will send a general questionnaire, rate sheet, and housing brochure.

  3. If desired unit is available, the Employee & Family Housing office will extend an offer, provide an application and rough draft of the License Agreement to the prospect. Otherwise the prospect may be placed on a waiting list. 

  4. Prospect will complete the application, provide the required documentation listed above and pay the $85 application fee (per adult) and a $500 holding deposit to reserve unit.

  5. Once all documents are received, Employee & Family Housing will begin the screening process.

  6. If approved, the prospect will be provided with their License Agreement and any additional documents for review prior to their move-in. 

Please note: 

  • Once approved for housing, the primary applicant will be designated as head of household and will be the responsible party for all financial and policy related matters. 

  • Each person over the age of 18 in the household must fill out an application and pay the $85 application fee. No cash is accepted.  

  • Credit files and criminal history checks are obtained through RealPage/Onesite screening system.

Prior to Move-in

Employee & Family Housing will schedule an appointment with all future residents to ensure the following for your move-in:

  1. License Agreement and move-in papework is signed. Please be sure to bring your government issued ID. 
  2. Review policies and practices with a Licensing Specialist. Proof of renter's insurance is required at this time*.
  3. Issue your keys.

Please Note:

  • The move-in process could take as long as an hour, please ensure that you plan accordingly.
  • All family members 18 years of age or older that will be residing with you will need to appear in person during the move-in process.

*Renter's Insurance

The Primary Licensee is required to carry personal renter's insurance on their apartment for protection due to fire, flood, theft, personal injury or casualty. The University does not assume responsibility for the loss, damage, or destruction of any personal property kept in the licensed space or on University property. 

Once Your Keys are Issued

A Licensing Specialist will walk you to your apartment and work with you to complete the Apartment Condition Form.
